Peter Bassano, Music Director, City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra

It is with the greatest pleasure that I along with the whole orchestra welcome Julian Milone as the new leader of the CRSO. Julian and I are old friends and colleagues sharing some twenty years as joint members of the Philharmonia Orchestra where Julian remains as the longest serving member.

Julian studied at Chetham’s School and the Royal College of Music. In 1979 he joined the first violin section of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and four years later became a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra in London, a position he continues to hold. Away from the Philharmonia he plays in András Schiff’s hand-picked chamber orchestra, the Cappella Andrea Barca, in violin ensemble concerts with his group, ‘4 Violins & a Bass’ and is professor of violin at the Kent Academy of Music.

Julian was instrumental in securing our cello soloist for Dvořák’s celebrated concerto. Anna Crawford is Philharmonia Orchestra’s MMSF Cello Fellow. Anna was a pupil at the King’s School, Rochester before beginning advanced study at the Royal College of Music. She is currently in a postgraduate year studying with Gemma Rosefield, where she is supported by the Victor and Lilian Hochhauser Scholarship. She was awarded first prize in the 2019 and 2022 RCM Cello Competition.

  • Councillor Nina Gurung, Mayor of Medway

Councillor Nina Gurung, the Mayor of Medway, writes:

If we want to promote ourselves as Borough of culture then we do need to work together to promote all types of music, arts and culture and support one another so that we are stronger as an Arts and culture collaborative group as we go forward.

The City of Rochester Symphony Orchestra has already won our immense respect for bringing so many amazing national and international talent to our Medway towns, and for all the noble work you do for various local charities, fundraising for Rochester Cathedral, and providing free orchestra experience for our primary school children. Thank you so much for all of this.

I sincerely hope that CRSO will be part of our big community events this year so that everyone in Medway will hear about and appreciate CRSO and hopefully will also encourage our young people to take up music.
